Jesus, You Are My Light: Helping Children Grow in Faith and Love

Children discover the world through questions, stories, music, and the people who care for them. In these everyday moments, families and churches have an opportunity to introduce them to the love of Jesus with patience, kindness, and joy.
In Matthew 19:14, Jesus says:
“Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 19:14, KJV
In this older English translation, “suffer” means “allow.” Jesus is welcoming children and telling others not to stand in their way. His words remind us that children deserve our time, attention, and care as they begin to explore faith.
The song “Jesus, You Are My Light” reflects that invitation. Its message encourages children to remember Jesus when they feel happy, when they need guidance, and when the world seems uncertain.
Singing “Jesus, You are my light” can become a simple expression of trust. Clapping, singing, and learning a chorus together can give children a joyful way to participate in worship, even before they understand every word.
Adults can help those words become meaningful. After listening, a parent might ask, “What is something you are thankful for today?” A Sunday school teacher could invite children to name one way they can show kindness. A pastor could explain that prayer does not require complicated language: children can speak honestly to God about their joys, questions, and worries.
Teaching faith also means making room for questions. A child who feels afraid needs comfort, patient listening, and practical help—not pressure to pretend that everything is fine. We can encourage prayer while reminding children that they can always talk to a trusted adult.
The example we set matters alongside the songs we sing. When adults listen carefully, apologize sincerely, welcome others, and help someone in need, children see what love looks like in daily life.
